It’s Juno’s weekend and everyone is planning their weekend music lineup, and hopefully their wardrobe. We Canucks love to show our Juno pride but we want to suggest that this weekend we evolve our Canadiana for a new, modern look.
The Canadian Tuxedo
We’re not going fishing people, update your denim-on-denim-on-denim for coloured jeans, mismatched washes and one of this spring’s hottest looks – lightweight denim. And always break it up with accessories.
Plaid This one is actually pretty on-trend but it is a style that has become more hipster than beards and toques.
The temperature is rising so put away the winter outerwear and wear lighter layers. You’re no longer impressing anyone with your branded fur collar.
Any kind of Jersey
No Canadian teams are in the playoffs, get over it.
In the last few weeks there has been a lot of buzz over 90s throwbacks. There were rumours about a Friends reunions (albeit disappointing), the X-Files were re-opened and people have been binging on Fuller House. But where are the fashion greats? Here are our choices for the ultimate fashion re-boots that we can only pray are right around the corner.
1. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
From Will’s street style to Carlton’s preppy looks and Hillary’s over the top nouveau riche, there’s nothing like a show about rich people to bring on the it-factor.
2. Designing Women
Surgarbaker and Associates hands-down showed some of the best of the 80s and 90s. This show was all about, big hair, big shoulder pads and big time cattiness.
3. Saved by the Bell
Maybe we’re too old to be watching but there doesn’t seem to be high school shows like there used to be – kids go straight from Treehouse to the Walking Dead, so we think they need another Archie and Jughead style teen comedy. It’s also fun when they live in California and get to wear outrageous Melrose street styles.
4. The Nanny
Queens NY meets British high society! Fran brought us In Living Colour blazers, turtleneck crop tops and cheetah print everything. If we could get this back we would watch it on mute. Maybe Fran is now the mother character… who would be the Nanny? Katy Perry? Snooki?
The Oscars are this Sunday and while we haven’t seen all (or hardly any) of the movies nominated, we are well prepped for the red carpet. Whether the fashion is on point or not, we love to see who is wearing what. It’s always interesting for us to see who takes a chance, who nails it and who takes a big bite of the red carpet.
Here are a few of our faves from the last couple years (it was tough to narrow down) and who we are excited to see this year:
Excited to see:
1. Kate Blanchette always brings it on the red carpet so we are so excited to see what she is wearing. We guess Prada!
2. Brie Larson (nominee) is a newbie to the red carpet and has had her fashion game on point lately so lets hope she gets a great look for the oscars to make her debut.
3. Eddie Redmayne (nominee) always looks chic and refined on the red carpet, but we are hoping that he gives us a little more edge this time around. Perhaps a coloured suit? Here’s hoping!
All time Faves:
1. Lupita Nyongo, 2013 Oscars
She channelled her inner Cinderella and her home town of Nairobi when she wore this gorgeous blue gown. We were wide eyed when we saw her enter the red carpet. So chic and simple, this look was one of the best we have ever seen.
2. Charlize Theron, 2004 Oscars
Giving us old Hollywood glamour, this amazing gown by Gucci is a stunner! In our eyes, it’s simple, chic and sexy. Not over done and everything is on point from the hair, make up and can we talk about that tan?! Amaze!
3. Gwenyth Paltrow, 2012 Oscars
How can you not look good wearing Tom Ford?! She put the cape back on the map. The fit is pure perfection and the colour pure elegance. Sometimes simple is the way to go when you want to make a statement when everyone else is trying so hard.
Although last night’s Grammys were a bit of a miss for us, we did enjoy the red carpet (as always) and want to share our best dressed of the evening. Overall, there were several
casual looks, some business suit realness and the odd outrageous look (mostly too out there for us to mention). We are all about expressing personal style, but pyjama pants and Hello Kitty do not belong on the red carpet.
Here are top picks for Best Dressed:
Carrie Underwood (Photo: Larry Busacca)
Giving us sexy and elegant, this black gown is sheen-tastic. Carrie showed a little leg, which is super on-trend on the red carpet these days, and the rouging gives it just the right amount of texture. The makeup and hair were also flawless.
Sam Hunt (Photo: Lester Cohen)
Now that’s how you make a statement on the red carpet! Wearing Pantone’s colour of the year, Rose Quartz, this gorgeous suit is fit really well and hits the fashion mark. We love it and paired with a simple white shirt, and no tie, is the way to do it as to not overwhelm the outfit.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legen (Photo: Lester Cohen)
This was the best dressed couple of the night! We love Chrissy in white, showing off her gorgeous baby bump and amazing sparkly cape. John is killing it with a printed Blazer and black bow tie. Simple, elegant and with the right amount of fashion.
Zendaya (Photo: Lester Cohen)
Face of Cover Girl, Zendaya is looking sharp in a black pant suit and short cropped hair. If there is anything we love it’s a fabulous woman in a pant suit and this double breasted number is so sophisticated and edgy at the same time. Perfection.
Kaley Cuoco (Photo: Steve Granitz)
Styled by fellow Canadian Brad Goreski, Kaley looks fabulous in a Naeem Khan jump suit. She is all about sparkle, giving us all kinds of sexy with the deep-V and cut-outs. We also love her tossled hair giving the look a rocker edge.
Nobody is more excited about Zealander 2 than we are. Arriving in theatres on February 12, we have a pair of passes to see the film in Calgary after it opens, all we want is for you to send us your best BLUE STEEL pose. Tag us on instagram (@thestyleguysca) and follow us, and we’ll put you in the draw for the tickets.
Not sure how to do BLUE STEEL? Check out the Blue Steel pose guide below.
A huge thanks to our friends at the GAP for inviting us to a special Calgary blogger yoga morning session this week. We’re always on the lookout for new gym and yoga clothes that combine fashion and function and the GAP has done it.
We love the selection of colours, bold patters and – dare we say it – we are now embracing the men’s fitness tights trend that is taking over gyms by storm. Great for yoga, running or even just getting yourself to the gym in the cold, these men’s leggings are really comfortable and look great under a simple pair of black shorts.

The Groundhog stuck its head out this week and (in Calgary anyways) he didn’t see his shadow, so that means and early Spring! We already know that this has not been the harshest of winters and I think many of us are already itching to put away our winter garb and get on with Spring clothes.
But don’t get too carried away – it’s not time quite yet. Before you pull out your linens and open-toed shoes we want to suggest a transition period; one that will keep you warm but also looking refreshed. Here are a few simple ways we suggest you ease your way into a lighter wardrobe.
Get your colour on
Even if it’s just a belt or a shoe get some bright colour back into your wardrobe to break up the black and grey.
Why not? Whether it’s through an accessory or a floral shirt, you don’t have to wait. Mix it up with your wools, furs and tweeds.
Just wear more – it sounds easy enough, right? That heavy winter coat is getting boring so pull out your overcoats, leather or denim jackets instead. Layer with sweaters, heavy scarves and hats to stay warm.
Made any new year’s resolutions? Sure, we all have good intentions in January but they drop off fast and furious. We were asked, what are top three style resolutions that you can recommend? A great question! Here are a few we think you can incorporate easily, painlessly and maybe even stick to.
Only wear what fits you. Purge your closet and take out those clothes that don’t fit well or aren’t flattering on you. If you’re not ready to part with them because your other resolution is lose 10 lbs, fine, but put them in a box and put them away. Looking at a closet full of unflattering clothes is a terrible way to start the day.
Dress for yourself. Sure, we all have responsibilities and need to dress the part but don’t let anyone tell you not to wear something if you love it (ahem, except Crocs, yoga pants in public or cargo shorts). It’s your body, your day, and life is short!
Try on one new thing. Afraid of prints? Always wanted a leather jacket? This is your year, just do it. Go get that one thing that you have always thought you should have but you’ve been holding yourself back from. You might be surprised by how you feel, who you meet and where 2016 takes you.
Whatever your goals, we wish you all a colourful and joyous year.
Men are notoriously hard to shop for. We may say, “we don’t need anything,” and that may be true, but we still love opening a well-thought out gift on Christmas morning. From the tech lover to the style guy in your life, or even the man who appreciates a proper cocktail, here are our picks for holiday 2015.
Dewar’s 12 – The world’s most awarded blended scotch, the Dewar’s 12 is the perfect drink to pour neat or on the rocks and enjoy conversation over the holidays.
LG G4 & Music Flow P7 – For the tech lover on your list we have two devices that are getting a lot of attention. The G4 is newest smart phone from LG with a 16 megapixel main camera so they can snap and share all of their memories over the holiday. It also connects seamlessly via bluetooth the Music Flow P7. With two channels this speaker fills the room like no other (or buy two and connect them for even bigger sound). Visit LG Canada.
HomeSense – We love a beautifully set up bar. Presenting your holiday guests drinks from decanters, in proper glassware, mixed in shakers and pitchers makes them extra special (and delicious). Visit the HomeSense website for inspiration and visit a store near you.
Mr. Turk – We met Mr. Turk himself at his Palm Springs flagship store a few years ago and we can’t get enough of the California dapper style. These are the pieces that a lot of men wouldn’t pick for themselves but when they wear them the compliments come flying. Push him out of his comfort zone and get him looking chic for the New Year. Mr. Turk delivers to Canada too, fear not!
The Loden Hotel – The Mad for Men Experience. We always stay at the Loden when we visit Vancouver and this year they are offering a special package for the fellas that includes overnight accommodation, 2 bottles of craft beer, men’s magazines, a tie clip, dress socks, pocket square and a boxing lesson in Loden’s BeFit studio. Visit here. Starts at $469/night.
