Open the Door to Polka Dots

Originally posted on 24 Hours Vancouver.

The polka dot is back. No, we’re not going to look like we’re en route to a costume party dressed like a clown or the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This time we’re seeing it in more subtle ways. And they’re popping up everywhere — socks, shirts, pants and sweaters.

The key to pulling off this season’s go-to print is scale. Try a miniature version with a mostly solid look if you’re ready to dabble or go over-scale to make a big statement. This week, we’re pointing out our favourite polka dots for the season.

1. This gorgeous Boss dress shirt is the perfect way to eliminate some of the plaid we’re seeing season after season. This winter, dress up your formal look by wearing this shirt and a suit or blazer. Or, dress it down with a simple jean jacket or layering piece like a chunky knit sweater.

2. Not ready to dive in headfirst with polka dots? Dip your toe into a great pair of socks. Jack and Jones is having a lot of fun with this trend and we guarantee that you’ll get a compliment when you cross your leg and the polka dots peek out.

3. Go bold or go home! We love this large print dot from Joe Fresh — perfect on a cardigan. You can wear it on its own or layer it to tone down the look.

4. We love pocket squares! A simple and chic way of adding in a bold colour or print to your look. It is subtle and understated.

5. Own the bold tie of the season and incorporate a little extra colour. We love the statement the red tie makes without being too over the top.

Colour Injection for the Closet

Originally posted in 24 Hours Vancouver

A short while back, we received an e-mail from a man who had recently shed a few pounds and was ready to treat himself to some new clothes. Like many men, he had never included a lot of colour into his wardrobe, but feels that now is the time.

So, how do men do this? It can be scary for males to buy colour for themselves and the big question is: how much is too much? No guy wants to feel like a clown or that they’re getting a lot of unwanted attention. For these men, we say keep it simple and take man-baby steps by introducing one bold colour in your outfit a day. By pairing a statement colour with neutrals you’ll make just the right statement.

1. Blue-soled shoes

Ladies have loved their Laboutin’s for years, now it’s time for the guys to give coloured soles a shot. These BOSS Grey Suede Wingtips with the blue sole are a really fun way to inject colour into your look.

2. A painless punch

Scarves are the easiest way to integrate colour into your look. Try this chunky yellow knit scarf from Jack and Jones over your coat or blazer for a bold and practical fall-winter look.

3. Bold britches

A red pant you say? We’re going to push you. We love vintage cords from J. Crew that come in several colours. These tell the world that you are not afraid of fashion. And wait until you see how many compliments you get.

4. Impress with less

Sometimes all you need is a great belt to add that finishing touch to your outfit. We love this orange stitch-striped webbing belt from the GAP, and you can’t beat the price.

5. The power of pink

Turn heads and make a statement with this fabulous pink wool blazer from Joe Fresh. We love the cropped look and feel that it’s a great one to dress up or down.

Indochino Traveling Tailor: Calgary Style Guys Blog

Calgary Men, if you’ve never had a custom suit made, now’s the time. Many men believe that it’s too expensive or too slick for their taste, but fear not, the team at Indochino have the entire process worked out for you.

First, they measure you. And no, it’s not like a sitcom episode with an inseam punchline. Trained staff get all of your measurements and build you a custom profile using their iPhones or iPads. Then, once your profile is built you start shopping. You have your choice of fabrics and cuts for suits all starting at $449. And really, where can you get a suit for $449, nonetheless custom made? Unless you’re planning a trip to Hoi An, Vietnam, this is your best bet for the price.

In a couple of short weeks you’ll have your custom suit to your door. And if it doesn’t fit they’ll fix it for you, either with a credit at a local tailor or make a new one.

Indochino will be in Calgary until November 24th, right across from City Hall (237 8th Avenue SE). Visit www.indochino.com.
