CURATE launches in YYC

Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 7.37.43 PM

Be The Style Guys, we not only focus on fashion and style, but also home decor. Aly, being a designer (Alykhan Velji Designs) is launching an exciting new venture called CURATE here in Calgary. The concept is basically a store within a store. CURATE has taken over a part of KIYA Home, that has recently opened in Deerfoot Meadows. He has handpicked some of his favourite artists and designers to be showcased in his first ever collection called Made in Canada. Each piece is hand made, designed, or developed in Canada. His goal was to bring high quality, beautifully designed pieces so that everyone has access to them, not just designers.

Aly has also collaborated with a local concrete artist, Mtharu in designing 3 gorgeous pieces for the home including a set of coasters, candle holders and votive holders. (These you will just have to go to KIYA Home and check it out!)

Here are a few of the great pieces that you will see:

What to wear to… Motion Ball

Charity events don’t get much better than this one. The Shine Gala will take place on April 10th at Flames Central and will be hosted by ET Canada’s Rick Campanelli.

Buy tickets here! And use the promo code: STYLEGUYS

Motionball is a not-for-profit organization that builds awareness and raises funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation (SOCF), targeting a “next generation” of supporters – Canada’s professional crowd who are not defined by their age but rather their mind set.

Check out our ideas on what to pick up from CROSSIRON MILLS to wear to the event. Shine on, Calgary!

Taking it to the Streets

It’s been four years since Calgary welcomed mobile food trucks to the city and now we’re looking ahead to mobile retail. We say, this will be a great addition to Calgary this summer (providing the City of Calgary can get on with it). Here are a look at our first three retail trucks coming to the #YYC.

Mobile truck owners are anxious to hit the streets, and who knows, maybe even come do a private party for you?

Sublime Mobile Couture

A moderate to high end fashion destination, this truck has the feeling of a walk-in closet. Ladies only, they carry local and international brands complete with casual wear, jewelry, blazers and even handbags.

Beatnik Bus

The Beatnik Bus is a mobile vinyl and local art shop. No doubt this one will be at all the festivals this summer.

Pharrell-What We Can All Learn from Him

This week, the Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA) named Pharrell Williams as the 2015 Fashion Icon. A pretty major honour, past winners have included Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman and Kate Moss.

So, what makes Pharrell a fashion icon? And what can we learn from him?

1. Pharrell has collaborated on many collections, including with Uniqlo, Adidas, G-Star Raw and Moncler Lunettes. This tells us that fashion doesn’t have to cost a fortune and that it’s all about the mix. Pair your street clothes with your expensive shades, your high and your low. It all works out.

2. Pharrell takes risks. The hat, the short suit and the pearls for example, who else wears these things? Well, you may not want to go that far but he does teach us that taking risks is important.

3. He tries a lot of different things. You may see Pharrell wearing a tailored tux one day, sneakers and adidas jacket the next – he’s not a man who can only pull off one look and likes variety. So, don’t be afraid to pull out something out of the norm once in a while!

Spring Trends from Bella 2015

Arguably, it was the biggest fashion show to take place in Calgary’s history. There were two floors, dozens of models, hundreds of guests, and fashion valued at more than our house. In a word, stunning.

We were honoured to have been asked to host the Magenta Carpet last night and in a couple weeks you’ll be able see all the action on Shaw TV. Mr. Turk was kind enough to dress “The Style Guys” last night but all eyes were on the Spring fashions when the music started.

Here are a few of the trends that Holt Renfrew presented, all in the name of raising money (over $500,000!) for the Calgary Health Trust and the Neonatal Care Unit at the Foothills Hospital.

Black & White Geometric

Go with a simple stripe or more complicated motif. This bold look is a great base to mix with colour and other prints.

Brunch: The Most Important Meal of the Week

Bow ties at brunch - a must.

Bow ties at brunch – a must.

Over the last couple of weeks we have been invited to some incredible brunches. The lengths people are going to on Sunday mornings these days is kind of amazing – breakfast items, lunch items, desserts and big helping of style – it makes us think that brunching is the new dinner party.

So, how does one throw a brunch that your friends will get out of bed for? Here are our tips.

And we have to make a special mention of Ania B and Stalman for sharing their stunning photos and Katie Marks (Toques and Truffles) for her stellar cooking and hosting skills at #SuperBlogSunday.

1. Make a variety of food, and lots of it. You don’t have to serve bacon and eggs – but it helps. Brunching means no rules. Make a roast beef, a salad, lasagna, whatever. As long as you have options and an egg dish you’re safe. And don’t forget something sweet.

Waffles, granola and cake, OH MY!

2. Day drinking. Make a feature cocktail (or two) with a non-alcoholic for the pregnant women attending and driving everyone home.

Feature drinks with edible flowers, come on!

3. Dress UP. It’s fun to dress up on a Sunday morning and not have to go to church. Invite your most stylish friends and make an event of it. You can go big – bow ties, hats, fascinators, pretty dresses. Go for it.

4. Theme it. The last one we attended was themed #SuperBlogSunday and hosted some of Calgary’s top fashion bloggers. At the event people were printing their photos wirelessly using an Instax. It’s fun to have an activity, so make it your own and get people involved.
