Style Guys Fall Press Tour 2016

Fall really is like the new year, and if you’re like us, it’s the time of year when you’re ready to get into new routines, set new goals and UP YOUR GAME! Whether it’s your home decor, grooming, fashion, or even your intellectual game, we have ides on how to finish off 2016 in style.

We visited four cities this Fall: Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa to show off items from our friends at HomeSense, Philips, Kobo, and Dockers.

  1. HomeSense – this year, HomeSense launched their Privé event, giving shoppers the chance to discover a new line of small electrical appliances, all perfectly priced (of course). From express machines to toasters to robot vacuums, they’ve got you covered. Event runs September 15 – 21 in select HomeSense locations across Canada.HomeSensePrive
  2. Philips – the authority in shaving, Philips launched the OneBlade this year to compliment their stellar collection of razors and trimmers. We featured a few of their products, including the Bodygroom Plus – a great tool for all areas below the neck (our media hosts LOVED this product).
  3. Kobo Aura ONE – delivering the best reading experience on the market today, the new Aura ONE features the largest screen in the category, front light technology, is water-safe, and can hold up to 6,000 books. It can also connect wirelessly to your local public library.AuraONE
  4. Dockers – The original casual Friday pant, Dockers recently celebrated their 30th anniversary. Continually upping their game, they launched a new collection of pants in a new Stretch Performance Fabric, so you never have to worry about saggy jean bum again. The Alpha Khaki was a big hit across the country, featuring a wider thigh for those guys who have large quads but still like a narrow fit.

Happy Fall, Style Guys!

Dorm Rooms Do’s

It’s back to school time and for those of you that are heading to post secondary or somewhere abroad, you will most likely be staying in a dorm. Now most dorms come with a bed, night stand and that is pretty much it. Now, remember you will be spending a lot of time (studying of course) in these spaces, so make sure you are adding some personality to these spaces. How do you do this, you ask? Well, we are here to help. Check out the video below and our list of Do’s to make your dorm room have some major swag!

  1. Pattern and Texture – You can introduce pattern and texture through your bedding, window coverings, and artwork. Think bold and bright colour and have fun with your patterns. Mix and match and create a unique look thats all your own.
  2. Organization is Key – baskets, storage pieces, dual duty furniture is what you need to ensure you are organized through out the year. Have a space for everything so you don’t have everything all over your room. You don’t have to be scrambling in  the morning to find your books, shoes, or laptop.
  3. Don’t forget about lighting – Lighting is key. One centre light fixture in your room will not do. Think about table lamps and floor lamps for accent lighting. Trust us, it will help when you are up late cramming for that exam that you forgot you had!

Check out these amazing finds from Homesense!

Let’s Hear it for the Mums!

She birthed you, bathed you and baked for you, so when Mother’s Day comes around we’re on the look out for the best gifts for your mama. Sure, perfume, flowers, breakfast, they’re all great gifts but this year we’re challenging you to think outside the box and come up with something that will really outdo your siblings (and isn’t this really the fun part?).

1. Handmade Items (but handmade by someone else). We’re big lovers of ETSY, and we especially love these pillows by Urban Tree Artistry ($34).

Pillow1 Pillow2 Pillow3

2. Cleaning lady (or man) for a day. Mom’s, you’re welcome for recommending this one, we know you want to come home to a nice clean house.

3. Tickets! This is one of our favourites, get her tickets to an upcoming show. Broadway? Mediums? Metal? Here are few upcoming Calgary shows with links to tickets.

Long Island Medium – June 11th

Motley Crue – December 13th

Musicals – coming up this year by Broadway Across Canada:  The Lion King, Once, Dirty Dancing, The Wizard of Oz.

‘Mountain Modern’ style for the home

Originally posted in 24 Hours Vancouver

Let’s face it: winter is in full effect and starting to feel long. All we can think about is staying warm and snug, making roaring fires, wrapping up in rich textiles, and wearing chunky knits. But unless you’re a snowbird (and we wish we were), the best way to get through the long winter is to get out to the hills and cozy up.

On a recent mountain getaway (complete with skiing and apres-skiing) we got talking about our favourite winter resorts. There are some amazing properties to visit, while others just don’t quite get it right. They become kitschy, missing the right touch of modern elegance.

So this week we focus on an alpine-chalet look we’re calling “Modern Mountain,” and the key pieces you need to get it.

Agnes Chandelier, Roll & Hill (rollandhill.com)
We love everything about this chandelier is it’s the ideal mix of modern and rustic. Reminiscent of a tree branch or even a snowflake, the gorgeous gold finish gives it a glamour edge perfect for a dream mountain escape.

Strandmon Wing Chair, IKEA (IKEA.com)
In design, wing chairs are back in full-force. IKEA has brought back this mid-century marvel from a vintage collection and it fits perfectly in a modern mountain space. The grey is also inviting, making this the kind of chair you’d want to curl up in (with a glass of wine, of course).

Icelandic Sheepskin Pillow, 29 Armstrong (29armstrong.com)
Made in Copenhagen, this gorgeous sheepskin pillow adds visual interest and warmth. It’s where design meets nature: great to layer with other textiles to create the luxury that is needed in a mountain getaway.

Chevron Mirror, Crate and Barrel (crateandbarrel.com)
This unexpected, hand-worked bamboo mirror is done in the perfect whitewashed finish. The obvious choice would have been cedar or pine, but instead try the organic edge of bamboo in a chevron pattern. The look is super modern and adds that little element of surprise.

No More Ugly Christmas Sweaters For You

This year we’ve put the Ugly Christmas Sweater on the naughty list — buttons, rhinestones, patchwork and bells need not apply. Instead, this Christmas we are in luck because chunky knits, fantastic prints and smart layering have never been more on-trend.

Dressed up or dressed down these holiday looks are fa-la-la-la-la-fabulous.

Old Navy, Novelty Xmas Sweater
Keep it casual with this great sweater from Old Navy. We love the deer, they give the outfit some holiday cheer without going totally Hickory Farms fromage. Pair it with your favourite worn-in jeans and boots. This look is very ‘I just got back from the forest to chop down a tree’ chic!

Holt Renfrew, Givenchy knit sweater
Nothing channels the holidays like a little argyle. This chunky knit from Givenchy is perfect for cozy nights by the fire. The two red stripes also give this sweater a modern edge.

Harry Rosen, Versace Collection, Diamond Jacquard Knit
Turquoise is a great colour for the holidays; such a change from the mundane red and green. This fabulous diamond jacquard v-neck sweater from Harry Rosen has just the right hint of pattern. A perfect layering piece or wear it all on its own.

Banana Republic, Charcoal Fairisle Shawl Sweater
The shawl neck is another big trend for men’s fashion and this one from Banana Republic is just right. The knit charcoal colour keeps it dressy, but still leaves enough room to let a collared shirt poke through — perfect for holiday dinner parties.

Colour Injection for the Closet

Originally posted in 24 Hours Vancouver

A short while back, we received an e-mail from a man who had recently shed a few pounds and was ready to treat himself to some new clothes. Like many men, he had never included a lot of colour into his wardrobe, but feels that now is the time.

So, how do men do this? It can be scary for males to buy colour for themselves and the big question is: how much is too much? No guy wants to feel like a clown or that they’re getting a lot of unwanted attention. For these men, we say keep it simple and take man-baby steps by introducing one bold colour in your outfit a day. By pairing a statement colour with neutrals you’ll make just the right statement.

1. Blue-soled shoes

Ladies have loved their Laboutin’s for years, now it’s time for the guys to give coloured soles a shot. These BOSS Grey Suede Wingtips with the blue sole are a really fun way to inject colour into your look.

2. A painless punch

Scarves are the easiest way to integrate colour into your look. Try this chunky yellow knit scarf from Jack and Jones over your coat or blazer for a bold and practical fall-winter look.

3. Bold britches

A red pant you say? We’re going to push you. We love vintage cords from J. Crew that come in several colours. These tell the world that you are not afraid of fashion. And wait until you see how many compliments you get.

4. Impress with less

Sometimes all you need is a great belt to add that finishing touch to your outfit. We love this orange stitch-striped webbing belt from the GAP, and you can’t beat the price.

5. The power of pink

Turn heads and make a statement with this fabulous pink wool blazer from Joe Fresh. We love the cropped look and feel that it’s a great one to dress up or down.

Men’s Jackets for the In-between Season

Originally written for 24 Hours Vancouver by the Style Guys:

It happened: it’s not warm enough anymore to go coatless. Not even a long-sleeved tee will suffice anymore — it is time to embrace the fall coat.

Now before you dig through your storage closet for the heavy-duty wool and goose down, we encourage you to instead warm up through layers.

A chic fall coat is a must for any stylish man and we recommend you have a couple of good light jackets on hand, roomy enough to layer a collared shirt, knitted sweater, hoodie, scarf or any combination. Mix your patterns and colours for added impact. And play with the length of your clothes. There are no layering rules that state your shirt or sweater can’t hang out from under your jacket.

This is your season to try on your clothes in a new way. Here are our top picks for fall coats if you haven’t found the perfect one yet for the in-between season.

1. Beige Trench, Zara

A classic trench will never go out of style. We love this beige Zara number. It’s nicely fitted, sleek and sophisticated. The length is perfect, as it’s not too long, giving it a modern edge.

2. Task Jacket, Jack and Jones

The varsity-style jacket is a big trend in men’s fashion. Made with leather and wool, snap buttons, and slit pockets, this is the ideal jacket to throw on for a casual weekend walk.

3. Denim Jacket, Old Navy

No stylish wardrobe should be without a denim jacket. However, beware of wearing blue denim on blue denim (a.k.a. the Canadian tuxedo). Instead, try pairing bright-coloured jeans or pants for some impact.

4. Paul Leather Jacket, Rudsak

This biker-style piece made with lamb’s wool is butter soft. Pair it with a T-shirt and a great scarf to ensure all eyes are on you this fall.
