Red Carpet Roundup: Golden Globes 2017

Awards season is upon us! This is like the playoffs people, and it’s time to take a look at who is off to an early lead. There are a few trends that popped up throughout the night and we’re going to name a winner in each category. Keep an eye on this space so we can share our favourites throughout the season – surely there is a lot more glam where this came from.

Black is Back

Mandy Moore | Winona Ryder | Amy Adams

The Winner: Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan
The deep plunging neckline was super sexy but the sheer cape and other over-the-top details really made this gown a stunner.

Natalie Portman | Viola Davis | Reece Witherspoon | Maisie Williams

The Winner: Viola Davis in Michael Kors
Viola looked stunning in this sequined, off-the-shoulder gown. We loved that she let the colour speak for itself and styled it with a simple, white clutch and matching bracelet.

So Much Sparkle!

Chrissy Teigen | Regina King | Priyanka Chopra | Sofia Vergara | Ruth Negga

The Winner: Sophia Vergara in Zuhair Murad
Because the detail in this dress was stunning and paired with her perfectly slicked hair and red lip it was a home run.

Because It’s Your Night

Janelle Monae | Olivia Culpo | Evan Rachel Wood | Naomi Campbell

The Winner: Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
There’s nothing more stunning than a woman in a perfectly-fitted tux. Extra points for fit and great hair.

Father’s Day Gift Guide

In the past, we’ve explored the gift ideas that appeal to all kinds of dads, ones who dress up, enjoy fine wine or scotch, travel, and splurge on grooming products. This year, we’re giving our ideas for the other 2/3s of dads out there – the guys who prefer to be in the yard, get the guys over and BBQ. Don’t be confused, these are still Style Dads but these guys are more comfortable in the yard than they are at a martini bar.

Breath, stretch, style with #Gapfit yoga

A huge thanks to our friends at the GAP for inviting us to a special Calgary blogger yoga morning session this week. We’re always on the lookout for new gym and yoga clothes that combine fashion and function and the GAP has done it.

We love the selection of colours, bold patters and – dare we say it – we are now embracing the men’s fitness tights trend that is taking over gyms by storm. Great for yoga, running or even just getting yourself to the gym in the cold, these men’s leggings are really comfortable and look great under a simple pair of black shorts.

Check out the online store for more and follow @CamLeeYoga on instagram and twitter.

CURATE launches in YYC

Be The Style Guys, we not only focus on fashion and style, but also home decor. Aly, being a designer (Alykhan Velji Designs) is launching an exciting new venture called CURATE here in Calgary. The concept is basically a store within a store. CURATE has taken over a part of KIYA Home, that has recently opened in Deerfoot Meadows. He has handpicked some of his favourite artists and designers to be showcased in his first ever collection called Made in Canada. Each piece is hand made, designed, or developed in Canada. His goal was to bring high quality, beautifully designed pieces so that everyone has access to them, not just designers.

Aly has also collaborated with a local concrete artist, Mtharu in designing 3 gorgeous pieces for the home including a set of coasters, candle holders and votive holders. (These you will just have to go to KIYA Home and check it out!)

Here are a few of the great pieces that you will see:

Spring Trends from Bella 2015

Arguably, it was the biggest fashion show to take place in Calgary’s history. There were two floors, dozens of models, hundreds of guests, and fashion valued at more than our house. In a word, stunning.

We were honoured to have been asked to host the Magenta Carpet last night and in a couple weeks you’ll be able see all the action on Shaw TV. Mr. Turk was kind enough to dress “The Style Guys” last night but all eyes were on the Spring fashions when the music started.

Here are a few of the trends that Holt Renfrew presented, all in the name of raising money (over $500,000!) for the Calgary Health Trust and the Neonatal Care Unit at the Foothills Hospital.

Black & White Geometric

Go with a simple stripe or more complicated motif. This bold look is a great base to mix with colour and other prints.

Oscars 2015, Red Carpet Roundup

Yesterday marked the 2015 Oscars, and for us the Red Carpet is THE most exciting part of the whole night. The most coveted night for fashion lovers and fashion houses alike, the Red Carpet for this years awards did not disappoint. There were of course some amazing hits and disastrous misses as per usual and here are top picks for the stars that really worked it out for us and ones that did not.

Calgary girls nail it; Tegan & Sara are a HIT.
Solange Knowles wears a red carpet ON the red carpet: MISS.
Gwyneth Paltrow inspired her inner ballerina: MISS
Jennifer Lopez would like to remind you (yet again) that she has a great rack: MISS
Rita Ora wows us: HIT
Emma Stone is delicious in this unexpected green number: HIT
ScarJo, love it: HIT
All hail Queen Lupita: HIT
Marion Cotillard, a beautiful woman in a terrible dress: MISS

The Fashions We Love to Hate

The great thing about fashion is that it sparks debate. Aside from maybe a black leather jacket, there is really no other piece of clothing that almost anyone can wear, or wants to. So with NYFW just wrapping up, we wanted to look at some of the trends that are here now, coming, or maybe never should have. You be the judge!

Nail Art

This one has been around for a while, and we thought it might be drawing to an end but it’s only getting more insane. Right now we’re seeing graphic art, jewels, stencilled art and sparkles. Who knew? Were our moms were right all along?

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at 10.21.56 AM

Hippy chic or bohemian nightmare? Fringes are everywhere from casual street-wear to evening-wear. The key to this one is to wear in moderation or you may end up looking like you’re wearing a costume.

70s Flared Jeans

This one comes and goes every few years. It’s a fun trend but doesn’t look great on everyone. Typically better on taller people or with really high shoes… the jury is out on this one.

Kanye’s Riot

This is one for the loyal Kanye fans. A collaboration with Adidas, Kanye was inspired by the London-riots of 2011. He went on to claim he is “The Robin Hood of Fashion.” We’re not quite sure where we are wearing these pieces but if we do get a hankering for some looting we know what’s on-trend.

SAG Awards Fashion Hits and Misses

Last night marked the 2015 SAG Awards and of course, we were watching the red carpet like fashion hawks. We feel that after the Golden Globes, we wanted to see the fashion get kicked up a notch. There were quite a few misses for us at the Golden Globes and to be honest, the SAG Awards were a little disappointing. There were barely any gorgeous glam gowns and we feel like everyone played it a little safe. We did however see a lot of white, which I feel is the on trend colour for dresses that everyone will be all over in the spring.

Having said that we of course have our tops hits and misses and without further adieu, here they are:

 Ariel Winter, ZAC POSEN

We saw a lot of white on the red carpet and we kinda loved it. The best was forsure our girl from Modern Family how is all grown up and looking fabulous. This look was on par and really worked for Ariel. Girl is coming into her own.

 Joanne Froggatt

A far cry from her outfits on Downtown Abbey, Joanne Froggatt brought some gorgeous glamour to the red carpet. The fit was perfect and we love the black, so elegant.

 Julia Louis Dreyfus

Sometimes a girl that plays it safe on the red carpet, this look brought a little sexiness. Julia looks fabulous.

 Kiera Knightly

After having a bad fashion moment at the Globes, Kiera has redeemed herself in this gorgeous purple number. Love the lace, the cut is fabulous an of course, the colour!

 Ellar Coltrane

A simple black suit but check out the shoes. A black and white brogue, divine!

TarynManningElisabethFranchiTaryn Manning, ELISABETH FRANCHI

What the heck!? This dress is not only ill-fitting but doesn’t do anything for her skin tone. It washes her out completely.

KateMulgrewKate Mulgrew

This picture speaks for itself. We are all about taking risks however this just did not work.

rs_634x1024-150125160323-634-laver-cox-sags.l.12515Laverne Fox

Serving up some mermaid realness, we are big fans of Laverne but just not her dress.
