Red Carpet Roundup: Golden Globes 2017

Awards season is upon us! This is like the playoffs people, and it’s time to take a look at who is off to an early lead. There are a few trends that popped up throughout the night and we’re going to name a winner in each category. Keep an eye on this space so we can share our favourites throughout the season – surely there is a lot more glam where this came from.

Black is Back

Mandy Moore | Winona Ryder | Amy Adams

The Winner: Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan
The deep plunging neckline was super sexy but the sheer cape and other over-the-top details really made this gown a stunner.

Not-so-Mellow-Yellow

Natalie Portman | Viola Davis | Reece Witherspoon | Maisie Williams

The Winner: Viola Davis in Michael Kors
Viola looked stunning in this sequined, off-the-shoulder gown. We loved that she let the colour speak for itself and styled it with a simple, white clutch and matching bracelet.

So Much Sparkle!

Chrissy Teigen | Regina King | Priyanka Chopra | Sofia Vergara | Ruth Negga

The Winner: Sophia Vergara in Zuhair Murad
Because the detail in this dress was stunning and paired with her perfectly slicked hair and red lip it was a home run.

Because It’s Your Night

Janelle Monae | Olivia Culpo | Evan Rachel Wood | Naomi Campbell

The Winner: Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
There’s nothing more stunning than a woman in a perfectly-fitted tux. Extra points for fit and great hair.

The 90s TV Remakes We’re Praying For

In the last few weeks there has been a lot of buzz over 90s throwbacks. There were rumours about a Friends reunions (albeit disappointing), the X-Files were re-opened and people have been binging on Fuller House. But where are the fashion greats? Here are our choices for the ultimate fashion re-boots that we can only pray are right around the corner.

1. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

FreshPrince
From Will’s street style to Carlton’s preppy looks and Hillary’s over the top nouveau riche, there’s nothing like a show about rich people to bring on the it-factor.

2. Designing Women
DesigningWomen

Surgarbaker and Associates hands-down showed some of the best of the 80s and 90s. This show was all about, big hair, big shoulder pads and big time cattiness.

3. Saved by the Bell

Saved by the Bell
Maybe we’re too old to be watching but there doesn’t seem to be high school shows like there used to be – kids go straight from Treehouse to the Walking Dead, so we think they need another Archie and Jughead style teen comedy. It’s also fun when they live in California and get to wear outrageous Melrose street styles.

4. The Nanny

TheNanny
Queens NY meets British high society! Fran brought us In Living Colour blazers, turtleneck crop tops and cheetah print everything. If we could get this back we would watch it on mute. Maybe Fran is now the mother character… who would be the Nanny? Katy Perry? Snooki?

GQ Lists 20 Most Stylish Men Alive

We love a good best-dressed list and GQ’s 20 Most Stylish Men Alive is always one to look forward to. Ever changing, this year we didn’t see Wes Anderson, Adam Levine or Matt Lauer (huh?) but we did see a few unexpected names on the list…this week, let’s talk about a few that we were a bit surprised to see. Do you agree?

Jeff Goldblum

Jeff

A great actor, with a broad range, he appears in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters and also makes us bust a gut. But is he worthy of this title of Most Stylish Man Alive? Actually, if we do some searching, he’s doing pretty well! The guy knows what he’s doing when he gets dressed and changes up the look often enough to earn him a spot.

Jared Leto

Jared

He’s tries really hard all the time, we give him that, but does he try too hard? Between all-white suits, beach blown hair and a daring street style the guy always makes a statement. Love it or lump it, we agree, he belongs on the list.

Jaden Smith

Jaden

When your parents have as much scratch as Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith it would only make sense that you’re going to be able to afford some good clothes (or at least get your dad’s Fresh Prince hand-me-downs). But is he really doing anything that outstanding, GQ? We say, not yet.

John Mayer

John

Really? We don’t see it. He’s got a good casual style, and wears some pretty expensive brands, but does this translate to a top spot? Not quite. He’s about 50% of the way there for us.

The entire list breaks down below, any thoughts?

Pharrell,

Ryan Gosling, Jeff Goldblum, Jared Leto, A$AP Rocky, Lebron James, Bradley Cooper, Jay Z, Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Daniel Craig, Jaden Smith, Russell Westbrook, John Mayer, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Mark Ronson, Mario Balotelli and Eddie Redmayne.

Weddings and Grads – How to be Timeless

Whether you’re graduating or getting married, now is the time of year when women are shopping in full force. You know that your photo will be taken hundreds of times and no matter how hard you try, you will never outlive a bad, dated outfit. But how do you dress when you want to be stylish, but not so stylish that your dress will be out of style before you sober up?

Here are our picks for the classics. The very few looks that will have staying power.

The Woman in the Fitted Tuxedo

It’s not a look that every woman can or wants to pull off, but you see this silhouette coming back over and over. Madonna, Annie Lenox, Marlene Dietrich, they all rocked it, so can you.

The Halter Dress

Made famous by Halston in the 70s, this look has really never gone away. It’s sexy without being sleazy, elegant without trying to hard. Also, it moves with you so it’ll help you make the entrance that nobody will forget.

Little Black Dress

What could be simpler? For your money, this is the dress that you will wear over and over again, so buy the most flattering, best quality you can afford.

Shopping for the right winter coat

There’s no doubt about it, the winter chill is here, and if you’re in the market for a new winter coat you will be overwhelmed with choice. We are both looking for winter coats ourselves and have been struggling, what length, what colour, what weight? Here are  a few things to ask yourself before you hit the stores (or possibly make a bad purchase):

1.How many jackets do you already have and what do you need (and can afford)?

Winter coats are expensive! Wouldn’t it be great to have as many jackets as you do pair of shoes? If you really need a jacket that can serve all duties then spend the most you can on a quality one that will last for a few years. If you can afford a few options then by all means, enjoy the variety and think about which ones are best for your lifestyle.

2. How exposed are you to the elements?

Are you the person who drives from your attached garage to an underground parked, walks the +15s all day and then goes home? In this case, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have a really heavy jacket and a wool coat will work to cover up as you run into the bank. If you ride transit, need to wait at a bus stop, have a long walk from the car to the office, need to sit in a rink while your kid plays hockey at 7AM then by all means, think very warm coats like down-filled.

3. What will you be wearing underneath this jacket?

If you wear a suit to work then make sure you have enough room inside to button it up over your blazer, fit is very important. Think about how you’ll be steering your car when you have these layers on, give yourself room to breath. If you are typically not wearing more than one layer (or covering up your mom-0-flage in the morning), then something more fitted can work.

4. Length- two key considerations here:
1. will you be sitting down on something cold?  If so, then a longer jacket will definitely be your friend.

2. will something be sticking out from under it? Think about what you wear after you take your jacket off. Are you someone who wears long sweaters, blazers, long shirts? If so, a long jacket will keep you looking great. If you like the bomber style jacket, and have things tucked in, it will work.

5. Colour/materials

This is a big one for busy parents who have to deal with messes in the back seat, carrying too many things at once or are trying to have their coffee, answer a call, take a note, all at once (basically breaking every Alberta distracted driving law). Likely a cloth jacket, lighter in colour will be ruined by the new year. Look for something that wipes off easily, probably black, navy or dark grey. If you have options or a cleaner lifestyle then look at other great neutrals like camel or grey.

Stay warm out there!
