It happened: it’s not warm enough anymore to go coatless. Not even a long-sleeved tee will suffice anymore — it is time to embrace the fall coat.

Now before you dig through your storage closet for the heavy-duty wool and goose down, we encourage you to instead warm up through layers.

A chic fall coat is a must for any stylish man and we recommend you have a couple of good light jackets on hand, roomy enough to layer a collared shirt, knitted sweater, hoodie, scarf or any combination. Mix your patterns and colours for added impact. And play with the length of your clothes. There are no layering rules that state your shirt or sweater can’t hang out from under your jacket.

This is your season to try on your clothes in a new way. Here are our top picks for fall coats if you haven’t found the perfect one yet for the in-between season.

1. Beige Trench, Zara

A classic trench will never go out of style. We love this beige Zara number. It’s nicely fitted, sleek and sophisticated. The length is perfect, as it’s not too long, giving it a modern edge.

2. Task Jacket, Jack and Jones

The varsity-style jacket is a big trend in men’s fashion. Made with leather and wool, snap buttons, and slit pockets, this is the ideal jacket to throw on for a casual weekend walk.

3. Denim Jacket, Old Navy

No stylish wardrobe should be without a denim jacket. However, beware of wearing blue denim on blue denim (a.k.a. the Canadian tuxedo). Instead, try pairing bright-coloured jeans or pants for some impact.

4. Paul Leather Jacket, Rudsak

This biker-style piece made with lamb’s wool is butter soft. Pair it with a T-shirt and a great scarf to ensure all eyes are on you this fall.
