If you follow the Chinese zodiac, you know that Jan. 31 marks the New Year, and 2014 is the year of the horse. It is said that if you are born under this sign you are bright, expressive, witty and popular. And you like to host parties for your many friends.

The description of the horse is actually similar to what we’re seeing in design in 2014 — creating spaces that are interesting, bold, and great places to entertain. Here are some of our favourite trends inspired by the strong and sometimes unpredictable horse.

1. Mixing metals

It’s all about creating visual interest by combining aged bronze, golds, and silvers all working together in space to create a warm and inviting look.

2. Monochromatic menagerie

Play with colours in the same tone and use that as your decorating colour scheme. The look is simple, modern and subtle.

3. Just add texture

Play with fabrics, accessories, and materials that add interest to a space.

4. Copper is king

The metal of 2014, you will see copper being introduced in so many different ways. Only getting better with age, this metal is warm and inviting.

5. Mirror, mirror

Forget about ordinary mirrors, this year make a statement by using antiqued, bronze or smoked mirrors. Something different and unexpected.
